MELBOURNE coach Simon Goodwin has been named as the Monjon Allan Jeans Senior Coach of the Year at the 2021 REIV AFL Coaches Association Awards.

Goodwin was announced as the award recipient on Tuesday night, polling 258 votes, ahead of Western Bulldogs coach Luke Beveridge (193 votes) and GWS GIANTS coach Leon Cameron (84 votes).

After a challenging two years that resulted in the Demons finishing outside the top eight in consecutive seasons, Goodwin’s leadership and strong relationships within the club saw Melbourne push to the top of the ladder, becoming 2021 minor premiers.

Goodwin led the Demons’ outstanding campaign as they now prepare for their opportunity to break a 57-year premiership drought this Saturday in the 2021 Toyota AFL Grand Final.

Accepting the award via Zoom, Goodwin said it was an honour to be recognised but the award represented the efforts from the entire Melbourne Football Club.

“I’m very humbled to be voted the AFL Coaches Association Coach of the Year by my peers,” Goodwin said.

“Although it’s an individual accolade, ultimately it reflects the efforts of our entire footy club.

“It’s an acknowledgment of the hard work and character of our entire football department and playing list.

“It is the sum off all parts that come together to create a strong football club and I certainly wouldn’t be receiving this award without the support and assistance of everyone who plays a role at the Melbourne Football Club.”

Melbourne assistant coach Troy Chaplin was also recognised, placing second in the AFL Coaches Association Assistant Coach of the Year.
