Melbourne has agreed to a contract extension with utility Joel Smith, which will see him remain in the red and blue until at least the end of the 2022 season.

The one-year deal, comes after an injury interrupted season for Smith, who has enormous x-factor with his impressive all round athleticism.

List Manager Tim Lamb said Smith has plenty to offer the Demons.

“Joel has had some misfortune with injury but what he has to offer is really evident to us,” Lamb told Melbourne Media.

“He has been really impressive at VFL level in the second half of the year. We know that Joel has the skills and physical attributes to become a really good AFL player and contribute to our future in a meaningful way.

“We are pleased that Joel has agreed to a new deal with the club and look forward to watching him develop his game further.”

The 25-year-old who was included in the squad to travel to Perth last week has played 18 matches for the Demons.

With a basketball background, Smith joined the club as a Category B rookie in 2015, while his father Shaun played for the club from 1995 to 1998.
