MELBOURNE coach Simon Goodwin described his side’s nine-point loss to the Giants as a “tale of two halves”.

But the Demons’ inability to hit the scoreboard when they had control after the main break proved costly.

“I thought our first half was certainly very average around the footy from a clearance and contest perspective,” Goodwin said post-game.

“We had our chances in the second half – we just looked a bit ‘rushy’ with our ball use inside 50 and our ability to finish certainly wasn’t to the level.

“It’s frustrating for the playing group as much as it is for the coaching and our supporters, because you’ve got momentum of the game and you can’t capitalise on it.”

After kicking 9.14 last week against the Bombers, Melbourne failed to correct its inaccuracy in front of the sticks on Saturday, managing just 7.13 at the MCG.

And while there's no need for the Dees to panic after their third loss of the season, they do still need to determine exactly what their best forward combination is.

“If you look through the history of the season we’ve lost two games playing three talls and one game playing two talls,” Goodwin said.

“But we’re not naïve to the fact that we probably need to execute better inside 50 and we need to score a little bit more.

“It’s something that we’ll continue to look at, but the key thing is those guys (Ben Brown and Sam Weideman) get themselves in really good form and that will give them the best opportunity to play.”
