HEAD of development Brett Allison reviews the Melbourne-listed players who played in the VFL and the AFL Development League at Casey Fields on Saturday

CASEY played Williamstown on a really windy day, favouring one end of the ground – it was a six to eight goal breeze. On a day that the team wanted to come and focus playing on their role – and play selfless team football – we were disappointingly beaten. We had the use of a six to eight goal breeze twice, and kicked four goals, but they’ve had the use of it twice and kicked 16 goals. – Brett Allison.

VFL: Casey Scorpions 4.6 (30) d Williamstown 16.14 (110)

Sam Blease: Sam played half-forward and wing. He had 23 possessions. Sam really struggled with his ball use, particularly by foot. In tough conditions, he found it very hard to find the targets. However, in the last quarter, we finally saw some flashes of Sam that we’ve been looking for all season. He won the ball and used his speed and either kicked a goal or got it to someone in a better position. That’s what we’re looking for from Sam.

Mitch Clisby: Mitch played half-back and had 20 possessions. It was his first game back after a quadriceps injury sidelined him for five matches. He was restricted to 80 minutes and got through that time without injury. So he achieved what he set out to on the weekend.

Michael Evans: Michael played midfield and had 13 possessions. He looked really flustered and distracted at times during the game. He was often by himself at stoppages, which is certainly not the way we want to play football. So he needs to really adjust that part of his game, if he wants to press for senior selection.

Jack Fitzpatrick: Jack played ruck and forward. He had nine possessions and 44 hit outs. Jack’s best work was in the ruck this week, where he had a good battle with his opponent, but I’m not sure he was in sync with his midfielders during the day. We’re still looking for far more impact from Jack around the ground as a ruckman or as a forward. He’s got a lot more work rate left in him, but we’re not seeing it at VFL level at the moment.

Alex Georgiou: Alex played full-back. He had 18 possessions. Again, this week, Alex at least broke even over the course of the game. He certainly endeavours to play our brand of footy week in, week out. Therefore, he is just waiting his opportunity at senior level.

James Harmes: James played half-forward and midfield. He had 14 possessions. Again, this week, there were one or two signs from Harmesy that he has some talls to play at a higher level of footy. But he knows defensively that that is the area he needs most improvement in and hopefully he’s starting to put the steps in place to see a change in that part of his game.

Jay Kennedy-Harris: Jay played half-forward flank and wing. He had 31 possessions. For the first time in three weeks, Jay came with a clear focus to play his role and get to as many fall of the ball contests as he could. He had great success in doing so and had a major impact on the game.

Max King: Max played forward and ruck. He had six possessions and one hit out. Max made his return from a long layoff, due to injury. He had minimal impact on the game. We probably erred playing him at senior VFL level.

Viv Michie: Viv had 18 possessions and played inside mid and half-forward. Once again, Viv battled away in the midfield, which was clearly outpointed by the opposition. He knows exactly what he needs to work on to put his name up for selection, so it’s time to start working at that.

James Strauss: James played half-back and midfield. He had 15 possessions. James struggled to have a consistent impact on the game. He really needs to continue to concentrate on forcing as many contested situations with his opponent, as he possibly can.

Luke Tapscott: Luke played half-back, half-forward and mid. He had 30 possessions. Again, this week, Luke was one of our stronger players. He attempted to play our style of footy and if he continues in that vein, we’ll certainly put his name up before the selectors.

Jimmy Toumpas: Jimmy played half-back and wing. He had 14 possessions. Jimmy is down on confidence at the moment and it’s reflecting his game. We’re just looking for him to keep it simple, take the ball cleanly and use it smartly. But on the weekend, we didn’t see that from Jimmy.

AFL Victoria Development League: Casey Scorpions 4.9 (33) d Williamstown 17.14 (116)

Maia Westrupp: Maia played the majority of the game in the forward line in a side that was badly beaten. He was starved of opportunities and was moved to defence in the last quarter and he at least saw a bit of the footy, when it was in that area of the ground.
