MAX Gawn will lead the Demons for the 2021 season after being re-elected as captain, while Jack Viney will again be by his side as the vice-captain.

Gawn, who has emerged as one of the premier ruckman in the competition, has played 134 games and last year achieved a fourth All Australian selection.

Viney, a natural leader, has played 135 games and continued his outstanding form in 2020, taking home third place in Melbourne’s Best and Fairest award.

The two leaders were nominated after a formal voting process by the players and coaching staff, which also included consultation with the senior executive of the club.

“We are very fortunate that we have a number of strong leaders within our playing group who display our club values on a consistent basis,” General Manager of AFL Football Performance Alan Richardson told Melbourne Media.

“As a collective, we feel the streamlined approach of having a captain and vice-captain worked really well last year.

“Pleasingly, this view was reinforced through the player voting process where both Max and Jack were the two standout candidates.

“They are not only great football players but they are also outstanding people and no one wants success for this footy club more than those two men.”

Gawn and Viney have been an integral part of the Demons leadership group for a number of years, after first holding a leadership position in the 2016 season.
