FOR THE MAJORITY of Sunday night’s clash at Metricon Stadium, Brisbane was the better side.

And despite the Dees’ fast-finish, with a three-goal to none final term, they fell four points short of victory against arguably the best side in the competition.

“To come back and be so close shows the fight in the group,” Jack Viney told Melbourne Media post-game.

“We’re a competitive team and we want to win.

“We weren’t going to let the game get away from us … and we gave it everything we had.

“Unfortunately, … I just think Brisbane are a more polished team and they did the basics of the game better than us tonight.”

While the Demons were clearly disappointed to fall to a 3-4 season record, Viney was adamant the physical encounter won’t go to waste.

“That’s the standard and there’ll be some good vision to go over and improve [on] because Port Adelaide are a very similar team, and what a great way to prepare for Port,” he said.

After conceding 13 more clearances and losing the contested ball battle to the Lions, Melbourne will need to improve in these areas come Round 9.

And with just four days between matches, it will have no choice but to turn its attention to Thursday night’s battle at the Gabba.

“We’ve got to move on pretty quick,” Viney said.

“It’s going to be an interesting month of football – something we’ve never done before.

“We reviewed the game, we understand where we need to get better, and we move on pretty quick to next week.

“Port are a really strong contested team – they’re [going to] put a lot of defensive pressure on us.

“The learnings from tonight I think will really help us coming into the next game.”
