Todd Viney’s season assessment
Liam kicked 40 goals for the year and was our No.1 goalkicker. He’s a really important player and hard to match-up on. But Liam needs to continue to work on his contested possessions and forward line pressure.

Round-by-round assessment
Comments made by 2011 Melbourne coaching staff members Mark Williams, Brad Gotch and Kelly O’Donnell

AFL: Round 1 v Sydney Swans
Liam was dangerous at times and finished with two goals. He didn’t have a great impact, but the fact that he was in our forward line meant he demanded a key defender. He almost took another mark-of-the-year contender. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 2 v Hawthorn
Liam needed to get back to basics with his football. He needed to go for his marks, lead hard and work on his defensive pressure. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 3 v Brisbane Lions
Liam answered his critics with five goals. He kicked some brilliant goals at important times in the game. Some of his goals were genuine highlights of the game. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 4 v Gold Coast Suns
Liam was lively up forward and kicked three goals, but he needed to attack the ball and present. He also needed to keep working on his forward pressure. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 5 - Bye

AFL: Round 6 v West Coast Eagles
We needed Liam leading up to the ball. He needed to put pressure on and kick goals. When Liam’s works hard in the forward line, we’re a much better team and we needed him to work hard at these aspects of his game. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 7 v Adelaide Crows
Liam was in-and-out of the game, even though he kicked 3.4. He didn’t capitalise on all of his opportunities. If he was clean with his ball-handling and attacked the ball harder, he could easily have kicked a few more goals. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 8 v North Melbourne
Liam needed to move around a lot more and play the game on his terms. His strength is his movement and speed, along with his ability to jump and mark the ball. He needed to give himself more opportunities by working harder. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 9 v St Kilda
Liam continued to kick goals, but we needed to see his agility and creativity. He also needed to keep moving and working harder. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 10 v Carlton
Liam didn’t work hard enough or involve himself in the game. He kicked 1.2 from three shots and had nine possessions. But he was capable of so much more. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 11 v Essendon
Liam was in-and-out of the game early, but settled to have a big impact in the second half. He kicked three goals and had eight scoring involvements. Liam was important and was not far away from some very good form. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 12 v Collingwood
Liam couldn’t get free to have an influence on the game. And he didn’t work hard enough to get himself free. He played the game on the opposition’s terms. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 13 v Fremantle
Liam couldn’t take a trick on the weekend. He fumbled and bumbled his way through the game, but in the end he kicked two goals and was rewarded for his efforts. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 14 v Richmond
Liam was much livelier this week. He had a couple of simple focuses and carried them out to the letter. He needed to focus on his finishing. It was great to see him enjoying himself on the big stage again. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 15 v Western Bulldogs
Liam started well with three shots on goal, without getting a result. His movement around the forward line was good early, but his work rate dropped off as the game went on. We wanted to see Liam more defensively active when the opposition had the ball. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 16 - Bye

AFL: Round 17 v Port Adelaide
Liam had an outstanding first half. His movement and ball use created many scores. Port Adelaide dropped defenders off to double team him in the second half, which reduced his involvement in the game. Overall Liam was solid and was not far away from a standout game. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 18 v Hawthorn
Injured: ill

AFL: Round 19 v Geelong Cats
Defensively, Liam was poor. He didn’t work hard enough. Mark Williams

VFL: Round 19 v Sandringham
He kicked three goals, but LJ also set up a couple of other goals. He played up the ground a bit and worked hard around the ground. Liam made an impact, enjoyed himself and showed great commitment throughout the game. Brad Gotch

AFL: Round 21 v West Coast Eagles
Injured: hip

AFL: Round 22 v Richmond
Although Liam kicked three goals we needed to see more defence from him. We needed to see him compete harder for the ball. He could have had a much greater impact, if he involved himself in the game, as his decision-making and ball use continually set up scoring opportunities. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 23 v Gold Coast Suns
Liam kicked three goals in two and a half quarters. He found space by spreading hard forward and kept presenting. He pressed well and caused several turnovers with his chasing, while he also pressured the opposition. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 24 v Port Adelaide
Injured: wrist
