BALL movement coach Mark Williams runs through the 22 players who played in Melbourne’s loss against West Coast Eagles at Etihad Stadium
Clint Bartram: Effectively curbed the influence of the very dangerous Daniel Kerr. Could have been best on ground, had he finished his hard work by kicking goals. His spread, willingness to work and his hardness in and around stoppage was outstanding.
Sam Blease: Defensively he got caught out at times on transition. But Sam had a much better game than his first one against the Bulldogs in round 15. Offensively, he was excellent. He took the game on, showed great composure under pressure and used the ball well.
Aaron Davey: Aaron played below expectations. He fumbled and missed opportunities to impact the game. We need Aaron more involved physically and we also need him hitting the scoreboard as well as setting up goals.
Lynden Dunn: Dunny was good with his leading patterns and spread. He contested well when the ball hit the ground. He followed instructions at forward stoppage, which contributed to our team kicking two goals from this area.
James Frawley: Defensively James was very good. He played mostly on Josh Kennedy, who had no impact on the match. Offensively, he never stopped running and won plenty of the ball.
Col Garland: Col was inconsistent defensively, but he won some good one on ones. Offensively, he started well with a couple of rebounds but needs to be more composed and back himself when under pressure.
Jeremy Howe: Jeremy attacked the ball in the air, taking some outstanding contested marks. His defensive game was also very solid. He had 10 marks and kicked three goals. He had a very good game and was again close to our best player.
Mark Jamar: Russian’s actions and effort were back to where we expect them to be. He contested very well at centre bounces and gave us some effective taps to advantage at around the ground stoppages. He needs to use more of his jump around the ground, instead of wrestling. The only detraction from his game was that he gave away five free kicks.
Nathan Jones: Jonesy’s endeavour and determination cannot be questioned, we love the way he attacks the ball.He had another solid game structurally and possession wise. There were just a few turnovers that detracted from his game.
Joel Macdonald: Joel gave his opponents too much room defensively. But some of his third man support was very good. Offensively, he won a lot of the ball with 16 uncontested possessions and 12 marks, but his disposal needs work.
Stefan Martin: Steffy really competed hard in the ruck, at times jumping over Nic Naitanui. His spread and second efforts at stoppage were good. He also played down back for long periods, taking the resting rucks. He impacted on occasions taking some strong defensive marks, but was caught out of position at other times.
Jordie McKenzie: Jordie had a good game, but it could’ve been a really good game if he used the ball a bit more effectively. As always, his intensity and determination at ground level was fantastic. His spread and willingness to work hard was great. He continues to grow in confidence each game he plays.
Brent Moloney: Beamer was solid overall. He did a great job on Matt Priddis, who had limited impact on the game. There was a big change in Beamer’s mindset this week. He sacrificed his game for the team, not always being our hit to target at stoppage, which also allowed our younger midfielders to stand up more and take responsibility for clearances.
Cale Morton: Cale positioned himself well on most occasions at stoppages. He used the ball well most of the time, but let himself down by not finishing and hitting the scoreboard. He must continue to increase his work-rate and defensive run and spread.
Daniel Nicholson: Daniel was subbed on and provided lots of energy. He had seven possessions for the quarter, but let himself down with his ball use.
Ricky Petterd: Ricky kept presenting throughout the game. He stayed in the game defensively. He showed much cleaner hands this week.
Jared Rivers: Jared was once again very solid defensively. His third man support, particularly in the air, was excellent. He had seven spoils. But there were times when Jared allowed his opponent too much room up the ground. He was one of our better defenders at taking the game on.
Tom Scully: His workrate and spread away from stoppage was fantastic. His structural positioning at stoppage was good. He must continue to back himself when he wins the ball. He fumbled on occasions, but another game under the belt will improve his fitness and ball handling under pressure.
Colin Sylvia: Col’s intensity was up early, particularly with his tackling, but he didn’t provide enough out of his spread. He needs to involve himself more in the game when he hasn’t got the ball.
Luke Tapscott: Tappy was solid defensively. He didn’t have any goals kicked against him and he dropped off well at stoppages. He still needs to work on pressing up in transition. Offensively, he didn’t have a great impact.
Jack Trengove: It was a very good game from Jack. His repeat efforts and work rate were outstanding. He read the game really well and used the ball intelligently. His in and under work was fantastic, as was his spread away from stoppages.
Jack Watts: Jack’s composure and ground balls have improved enormously with his confidence. He used the ball well and set up several scoring opportunities for us with his defensive involvement. He continues to provide a connection for the backs to use coming out of defence.
