Grimes, who injured his shoulder in the lead-up to the second NAB Cup round, returned to play for Casey on Saturday night.
Football manager Josh Mahoney said Grimes needed to pass the required training to lead the Demons with Trengove this Saturday afternoon.
“Jack played three quarters for Casey on Saturday night, and he got through the game with no ill effects to his shoulder,” he told melbournefc.com.au.

“If he gets through the main training session this week, he’ll be available for selection.”
Mahoney said the Demons had a reasonable list to choose from entering the premiership season.
“Our goal throughout the NAB Cup series was to play a number of players and to reach game times,” he said.
“We wanted to expose players to a new game style, and we were able to achieve this through the NAB Cup series.
“We’ve now got the majority of our list available for round one.”
But defender James Strauss’ frustrating run with injury has continued, after he suffered concussion against Williamstown in the opening round of the VFL.
Strauss, who recently returned from a nasty broken leg sustained against Carlton in round 20 last year, will miss one match.
“Unfortunately, James received a heavy knock to his face in the last quarter on Saturday night,” Mahoney said.
“He won’t play this week.”
As expected Colin Sylvia will miss the opening four rounds with a back injury.
