MELBOURNE has acknowledged the contribution made by supporters Mike Anderson and Ralph Crapper, who were named joint winners of the 2013 Gordon Lockhart Volunteer of the Year

The duo received their awards from Beth Lockhart at Monday night’s annual general meeting at the MCG. The award was instituted in honour of Beth’s late father, Gordon, who was a long time volunteer, and whose efforts have been continued by the entire family. Julie, Beth, Lauren and James all maintain a strong interest and involvement in the club, from assisting at functions to James’ match day role in the rooms.

Anderson and Crapper have combined for more than 40 years service to Melbourne. In 2014, Crapper is set to be involved in his 24th year and Anderson his 19th. They have serviced Melbourne’s members and their guests as hosts of the premium members function on match day, now in the Lindsay Hassett and Jack Ryder rooms at all home games.

Anderson and Crapper have raised significant funds for the club via raffles and other fundraising activities. Crapper makes money for the club week in, week out.

They have also acted as customer service officers, room hosts and security (when the occasional Collingwood supporter has tried to infiltrate the red and blue heartland).

Anderson has interviewed many Melbourne players and personalities, often in difficult circumstances in recent times, but always providing guests in the room with insight into the club. But after a win, he has led the club song.

Melbourne acknowledges their service and commitment to this important duty on match day.

Anderson and Crapper have built up strong relationships with Melbourne members, who attend the functions and they have been invaluable with their service.

They have made each member feel welcome, provided information and made some lifelong friends along the way.
