MELBOURNE coach Simon Goodwin says there were glimpses of his side’s best in Saturday’s performance against Carlton, despite only just getting over the line.

The Demons came out of the blocks in Round 2, kicking seven unanswered goals and setting themselves at 42-point lead.

But a second-half comeback from the Blues resulted in just a one-point victory for Goodwin’s men – one that was not for the faint-hearted.

“I think all Melbourne supporters would’ve had some nervous moments,” Goodwin said post-match.

“There are some great learnings in it for us a club with how good we can be, and the things we’ve get to keep working at.

“It’s really tough to win in this industry and we’ll take the victory.”

The Dees’ pressure and intent was on full display in the opening term, booting five goals and keeping their opponents scoreless.

It wasn’t until the last minutes of the second half when the Blues managed to convert their first major, but their increased effort continued after the main break.

“I loved our contest early,” Goodwin said.

“I thought it was as hot as it’s been in a long time and also as dynamic. I also loved the way we defended.

“There’s no doubt Carlton really ramped up their intensity around the ball [after half time]. We couldn’t get the ball out of their half enough and we couldn’t connect forward of centre.

“We just need to be able to use the ball a little bit better through the middle of the ground and that will enable us to connect more.”

While the close victory, which was decided by a late Bayley Fritsch behind, may not be to all fans’ taste, there was plenty to like about some Demon inclusions.

Melbourne made seven changes to its side in Round 2, with one being extra special – Harley Bennell.

And after 1,021 days since his last game, the AFL community relished his return.

“It was just great to see Harley back out there,” Goodwin said.

“It’s an unbelievable story, not only for Harley but our footy club.

“He still needs to be right at this best, but he worked his way into the game.”

After getting through unscathed, Bennell will now shift his focus to recovering in time for the Dees’ Round 3 match against Essendon next Sunday.
