MELBOURNE vice-captain Jack Viney has departed the club after 14 years wearing the red and blue.
The Demons will receive Pick 45 in the upcoming 2026 AFL Telstra AFL Draft, along with 2027 second round, 2028 second round and a 2028 fourth round as compensation for his departure to the West Coast Eagles along with Trent Rivers and a 2028 second round selection.
The decorated midfielder has made a profound impact throughout his time at Melbourne, including vice-captaining the side to their first premiership in 57 years in 2021.
Melbourne’s AFL List Manager Tim Lamb thanked Viney for his significant contribution and wished him the best for his next chapter.
“Jack has been a pillar of our football club for so many years,” Lamb said.
“He is a ruthless competitor, an incredible leader and a significant part of our clubs history.
“It’s always difficult to part ways with a player like Jack, and even more so a premiership vice-captain, but we believe this move is what’s best for Jack, as well as the long-term future of our club.
“Jack has given our members and fans so many incredible memories, and he will always be a Melbourne person who is welcome within our four walls.
“We wish Jack, Charlotte and their family all the best for their next chapter in Perth.”
Viney finishes his time at the Demons as a two-time Keith ‘Bluey’ Truscott Memorial Trophy winner, a five-time best and fairest podium finisher and was honoured with a Life Membership in 2024.
He also co-captained the side from 2017–2019 and won multiple club awards, including the James McDonald Trophy - TRUE Player (2022), and Harold Ball Trophy - Best Young Player (2013).
Viney’s impact on the Demons will extend well beyond his time at the club. As a father-son selection, he continued the legacy of his father and Melbourne legend Todd Viney.
The 32-year-old currently holds Melbourne’s all-time club record for tackles and sits second for all-time contested possessions.
Playing 238 games for the Demons since making his AFL debut in 2013, Viney was selected via the father/son rule with Pick 26 in the 2012 AFL National Draft. He earned an AFL Rising Star nomination in his debut season.
Melbourne Football Club thanks Viney for his outstanding service and wishes him success in the future.
