MELBOURNE forward Mia Austin has undergone surgery on a throat injury.

The club's General Manager of AFLW, Katrina Gill, provided an update on the Demon on Saturday.

"Mia sustained an injury to her throat during the game against Collingwood,” Gill said.

“Following scans and specialist review, Mia underwent surgery to ensure a complex cricoid fracture was stabilised. Mia requires an initial period of rest and will then start to build her training loads under the guidance of the medical team.

"Mia is recovering well and in good spirits. We will continue to support Mia and a timeframe for her return will become clearer after this initial recovery period.”
