The Casey Demons have gone down to Carlton on Saturday afternoon at Casey Fields.
After a difficult meeting between the two sides earlier in the season, the Demons produced a much-improved performance, competing strongly for long periods and showing plenty of positives despite falling short on the scoreboard.
Casey made an encouraging start, with its defensive pressure setting the tone early. The backline stood up under sustained Carlton attacks, while the midfield worked hard to create opportunities going forward.
The Demons were rewarded for their effort when Tylah Burn kicked the opening goal of the match, giving the home side an early advantage.
The contest remained tight throughout much of the first half, but two late goals from the Blues in the closing minutes of the second quarter proved pivotal. Carlton carried that momentum into the second half and was able to gradually build its lead despite Casey's continued effort.
Missing key defenders Kasey Phillips and Lily Snow, the Demons' backline was challenged throughout the afternoon but responded well. The defensive group consistently applied pressure, produced a number of important spoils and intercepts, and forced Carlton into difficult shots on goal.
Gemma Proy was a standout in defence, finishing with nine tackles and five intercept possessions while continuing to compete strongly in every contest.
Ashleigh Perkins made an impressive return to the side, collecting 14 disposals and five rebound 50s as she provided plenty of drive from the back half.
Co-captain Meg MacDonald once again led by example, recording 18 disposals, eight tackles and five intercept possessions while spending valuable time helping organise the defence.
Jess Pacevski battled hard through the midfield, finishing with a team-high six clearances to go with 15 disposals and seven tackles in a determined performance.
A special moment for the Demons came before the opening bounce, with Zoe Mitchell celebrating her 50th VFLW game. Following a heartfelt jumper presentation from her father, Mitchell capped off the milestone with a strong performance, collecting 23 disposals and five clearances to be among Casey's best.
Although the result didn't fall Casey's way, the Demons showed clear improvement from their previous meeting with the Blues and will take confidence from a number of strong defensive performances. As the side heads into the bye, there will be plenty to build on while continuing to develop its ball movement and ability to generate scoring opportunities in the final rounds of the season.
