The Casey Demons have returned to the winner's list with an impressive victory over North Melbourne at Arden Street.
It was a complete four-quarter performance from the Demons after consistency had eluded them in recent weeks. In a game where turnovers proved costly, Casey were composed with ball in hand and made North Melbourne pay for its mistakes, while limiting its own errors throughout the afternoon.
The Demons' dominance around the contest was reflected in the numbers, winning the clearance count by 14 and laying 18 more tackles than their opponents. Their work rate and pressure remained high from the opening bounce until the final siren.
There were contributors across every line, with a number of standout individual performances helping drive the result.
Lukas Cooke was outstanding in the opening half, collecting 14 disposals and pushing forward to kick a goal. His ability to intercept, rebound from defence and launch attacking chains was a feature before he was withdrawn at half-time.
Bailey Laurie also made an impact before also being managed at the main break, finishing with 10 disposals and a goal in an energetic display.
Despite losing two rotations at half-time, the Demons maintained their intensity for the remainder of the match. After reduced rotations proved costly the previous week, Casey handled the challenge superbly, with every player lifting to ensure the side finished the game strongly.
Christian Salem built into the contest as the game wore on and finished as the game's leading disposal winner with 26. Rotating between half-forward and the midfield, Salem recorded five tackles, five clearances and eight inside 50s, providing a constant link between the midfield and attack.
Paddy Cross produced a dominant performance, finishing with three goals, 24 disposals and seven tackles after spending more time through the midfield. North Melbourne had few answers for his influence as he impacted both around the contest and inside 50.
Xavier Taylor continued his impressive development with one of his strongest performances in Casey colours. He completely nullified his direct opponent while gathering 18 disposals, eight marks and seven intercept possessions, consistently turning defence into attack.
Ricky Mentha was equally influential behind the ball, recording 20 disposals and seven intercept possessions. His move forward in the final quarter paid immediate dividends as he capped off his afternoon with a classy running goal.
Tom McDonald spent more time in attack than at any stage of his VFL season and made the most of his opportunities. He took a game-high three contested marks and finished with three goals in a commanding display inside 50.
Max Mapley enjoyed one of his best games for the club, controlling the ruck contests and making his presence felt around the ground. He finished with 18 disposals and six clearances in an influential performance.
While Tom Matthews' impact wasn't fully reflected on the stat sheet, his team-first efforts were crucial. His highlight came with a desperate defensive sprint to spoil a certain North Melbourne mark inside their forward 50, a play that quickly turned into a Casey goal at the other end.
Jed Adams was another key contributor in defence, taking a courageous intercept mark early in the game before finishing with 18 disposals and nine marks.
Riley Onley continued his strong run of VFL form, collecting 19 disposals, six marks and four tackles while providing plenty of drive on the outside.
VFL-listed defender Miller Bergman controlled the tempo from half-back, accumulating 25 disposals as he continually set up Casey's ball movement.
Ethan Stanley and Jarrod Gatt provided strong running power on the wings. Stanley finished with two goals, while Gatt added one of his own in another valuable performance.
Luis D'Angelo continued his consistent season with 17 disposals, four clearances, six tackles and a goal, while Jasper Russell backed up his debut with another encouraging display, finishing with 15 disposals and nine marks.
The performance was an important response from the Demons, who combined strong contested work with disciplined team defence and efficient ball movement to produce one of their most complete displays of the season. After several weeks of showing patches of strong football, Casey was able to sustain its intensity for the full four quarters and earn a deserved return to the winners list.
The challenge only gets tougher next week, with the Demons returning home to Casey Fields to face the competition's benchmark side, Geelong. After building confidence with a comprehensive win over North Melbourne, Casey will look to carry that momentum into one of its biggest tests of the season.
