The Casey Demons have fallen to the undefeated North Melbourne Werribee in Round 10 of the VFLW, going down to the competition's benchmark side at ETU Stadium.
Facing the ladder leaders was always going to be one of Casey's toughest challenges of the season, but the Demons showed plenty of fight throughout the afternoon against an outfit that remains unbeaten in 2026.
The opening quarter was an encouraging one for Casey. The Demons matched North Melbourne Werribee's intensity around the contest and worked hard to deny the home side easy scoring opportunities, restricting them to just two goals for the term. Casey also generated several forward entries of their own, but were unable to capitalise on the scoreboard despite creating promising attacking passages.
The Demons continued to compete strongly in the second quarter and were rewarded when Rebecca Fitzpatrick kicked Casey's first goal of the afternoon. The visitors were able to gain territory for periods of the quarter and continued to challenge North Melbourne around the contest. However, the ladder leaders made the most of their opportunities going forward, converting efficiently from their inside 50 entries to build their advantage.
The contest remained fiercely fought after half-time, with Casey's pressure and work rate never dropping away. The Demons continued to battle hard around stoppages and through the midfield, but North Melbourne Werribee's polish going inside 50 proved the difference as they capitalised on their chances, while Casey was unable to find the same reward for its efforts.
Despite the final margin, there were encouraging signs in the numbers. Clearances and inside 50s were relatively even across the afternoon, highlighting Casey's ability to compete against the competition's top side and create opportunities. The difference came in front of goal, where North Melbourne Werribee finished its work more effectively.
Defensively, the Demons produced some of their strongest passages of the season. The Casey defence regularly forced turnovers and denied North large passages of uncontested ball. They showed positive ball movement when transitioning from the back half, creating several promising chains against one of the league's most difficult teams to score against.
While the result didn't fall Casey's way, there were plenty of positives to take from the performance. Matching the competition's best side in key areas for long periods demonstrated the growth the group has made throughout the season, with valuable lessons to be taken into the final stretch of the year.
Meg Macdonald once again led from the front with a typically courageous performance in the midfield. The co-captain set the standard with a game-high 12 tackles, while also collecting 13 disposals and seven clearances. Her relentless pressure around the contest and willingness to put her body on the line ensured the Demons remained competitive throughout the afternoon.
Tylah Burn continued her outstanding run of form, producing another influential performance through the midfield. Burn finished with 18 disposals and a team-high eight clearances, consistently giving Casey first use at stoppages and working tirelessly across all four quarters.
Bonnie Williams also enjoyed an encouraging outing after spending increased time in the midfield. In a new role, the young Demon impressed with four clearances and six tackles, continuing to show her versatility and development at VFLW level.
In the ruck, Zahri Burn battled strongly against quality opposition and provided a reliable target around the ground. She took several important marks, presented well as an option down the line and consistently brought the ball to ground, allowing Casey's midfielders and small forwards to go to work at the fall of the ball.
Down back, Delany Madigan stood tall under sustained pressure to produce one of her best performances of the season. She finished with 14 disposals and six tackles. Her willingness to compete in every contest helped limit North Melbourne Werribee's scoring opportunities throughout the game.
Abbey Rabot also had several influential moments on the wing, using her running capacity to link up between defence and attack. She worked hard to provide an outlet in transition and continued to cover plenty of ground on both sides of the ball.
While there were encouraging signs against the competition's benchmark side, the Demons know there is still plenty of work ahead. The challenge has highlighted the areas the group needs to improve, with the Demons taking valuable lessons from the contest as they continue to build throughout the remainder of the season.
