DEMON veteran Jake Melksham has hit the ground running in his return from a leg injury, booting a match-leading four majors alongside young talent Luker Kentfield.
It was a bounceback win for Casey as they downed Footscray on the back of a number of strong performances from AFL-listed Demons.
VFL coach Rhett McLennan reviewed their performances.
Andy Moniz-Wakefield (32 disposals, two goals, 10 marks, seven tackles, five clearances)
"Andy was brilliant in regards to his impact on the contest and what he did as a high forward. I think the really awesome thing for Andy was that we put him into the midfield and he actually had some really good clearance work as well. It was off the back of just his ferocity at the footy and the opponent defensively, he really put them on the back foot, and then and then for him to cash in and kick three goals too was just sort of the icing on the cake."
Tom McDonald (29 disposals, 10 marks, eight intercepts)
"TMac was great and did some really good stuff on offense which was really pleasing. The great thing about Tom is the amount that he's actually helping the younger guys around him. So to have Riley, Oscar and Xavier there, to have a mentor like Tom's been incredibly beneficial for them. And I think it's actually bringing the best footy out in Tom as well, which is awesome."
Jake Melksham (18 disposals, four goals, eight marks)
"Melky was fantastic. We knew we had two aces up our sleeve with two experienced guys at either end of the ground, and so Melky assumed Tommy's leadership role but in the forward line. It really helped Luker and our other power forwards, guys like Kalani as well."
Luker Kentfield (11 disposals, four goals, nine marks, three contested marks)
"Luker was sensational. He started and ended the game really well and was a little bit quieter in the middle part of the game, but when we really needed him, he stepped up and flew for the ball really well. His footwork and his mindset to roll on from one contest to the other was really good as well."
Jack Henderson (27 disposals, two goals, 10 marks, five Inside 50s)
"Hendo lost a tooth late in the game unfortunately for him, but he was his consistent self in the VFL. He's along with Tommy McDonald, been our most consistent performer for Casey. No matter where we've played him, which is either midfield or speed forward, he's done his job, he’s kicked goals and he's had clearances. His defensive stuff's been good and he's one that has really pushed the opposition."
Xavier Taylor (16 disposals, seven marks, five intercepts)
"It was easily Xavier's best game of the year so far. He really played in a manner that was really similar to his year last year in the Talent League. He intercept defended, was a threat on the way out and ran and moved the footy with confidence. He's still got some stuff to to work on in regards to how sure he is with ball in hand, but his defensive stuff's improved out of sight and keeps getting better every week, and it was great that he was able to have a game like that."
Ricky Mentha (32 disposals, 23 kicks, eight intercepts)
"Ricky's last half was really good. I thought his element of how he tried to link up our defense into attack was really good, but he's had some really good defensive moments as well. He's been tackling better, been defending high balls really well as well. I actually still think the really exciting thing about Ricky is his best is yet to come. He still actually really hasn't put four quarters of footy together. So when he does, it's going to be pretty special."
Oscar Berry (11 disposals, five marks, six intercepts)
"Oscar's last two weeks have been sensational, so I couldn't be happier for Oscar. He's worked really hard. He's a real professional in the way that he's actually approaching his footy. For him to have two really productive weeks is just a validation that if you get the process right, the results will come. He was great on offense, he's got better on defense and is improving every week."
Tom Matthews (12 disposals, two goals)
"His goal was really about running patterns in understanding that speed forward position. He's been doing a lot of work with Kade Chandler, who's obviously had a fantastic season, and Tommy is working towards getting better in that space. He kicked a couple of goals, which was fantastic. He was probably a little bit lighter on the stat sheet this week, but what we really wanted to get after was him understanding that role. I think we ticked that box in the weekend."
Kalani White (10 disposals, five hitouts, two marks)
"Kalani had some good moments again. I thought he jumped for the ball a lot better. He fell out of concentration in the game for big chunks of it and the ball went around him a fair bit, but when he's locked in and he's thinking about his technique, his athleticism shines through. You'll see moments in the game where especially from a leap and a highest point, point of view, he's a mile ahead of anyone else on the ground. That athleticism and that ability to be able to do that, once that also comes together on a more consistent basis, he’s going to be really exciting."
Riley Onley (Eight disposals, six kicks, three intercepts)
"Riley had some really good moments as well. I think he's actually grasping the defensive aspect of his game better each week. His come forward and defend stuff was really good. He showed with a couple of contests just how strong he is. He can utilise that and it can become a real weapon as he starts to develop his game. Even though some of his fundamentals weren't great, I think the upside to his game, especially from a physicality point of view, was there to be seen."
