PATRICK Cross will make his AFL debut this Sunday against Carlton, completing a remarkable journey from the VFL to the game’s biggest stage.
The 23-year-old earns his opportunity after three strong seasons with Casey, capped off by an impressive 2025 campaign that saw him play 18 games and kick 24 goals.

Overlooked in his draft year, Cross returned to Gippsland Power as a 19-year-old before working his way into the Casey Demons program.
His path hasn’t been without challenges, with back-to-back hamstring injuries halting his momentum early, before breaking through with his first uninterrupted season last year.
Now, after building his craft at VFL level and training consistently with Melbourne’s AFL group across the summer, Cross is ready for his opportunity.
“It’s crazy. A crazy feeling. It happened so quickly, and now I’m just excited to get to work and run out there with the boys,” he said. The 23-year-old shared the news with those closest to him straight away, calling his parents and older brother to let them know.
Having taken a longer path to AFL level, Cross reflected on the journey that led him to this opportunity. “It’s pretty special. I’ve taken the long road a little bit,” he said. “I stuck at it at Casey for three years, overcame a couple of hamstring tendon injuries, and now I’m playing my first game.” The forward believes his time developing through the VFL system has played a key role in preparing him for the top level, both on and off the field.
Now on the cusp of his debut, Cross is focused on bringing his strengths to the side while embracing the moment. “I’ll bring speed, compete hard, give 100% effort and hopefully kick a few snags,” he said. While admitting to some nerves, he’s eager to take it all in on the big stage. “I’ll just be soaking it in, especially at the ‘G in front of the Melbourne fans.”
Cross becomes the latest Casey product to earn an opportunity at AFL level, reinforcing the strength of the club’s pathway system.
He will run out in the red and blue for the first time this weekend, marking the beginning of his AFL journey.
