LIV PURCELL will miss the remainder of the AFLW season after rupturing her ACL in Melbourne’s Round 2 win over St Kilda on Saturday.

The 24-year-old was assisted from the field during the second quarter of the game at Casey Fields, with scans later confirming the extent of the damage.

Melbourne GM of AFLW Clare Pettyfor provided an update on the hard-at-it midfielder.

“Unfortunately, scans have confirmed the news we feared, with Liv rupturing her ACL in Saturday’s game,” Pettyfor said.

“This is obviously incredibly disappointing for Liv. She put a mountain of work into her footy over the pre-season, and we all got a glimpse of the impact she was set to have in the opening rounds.

“Liv has had her fair share of injury concerns in recent years, which makes this news even tougher to take. She is as resilient as they come though, and we know she will tackle this next challenge with the utmost professionalism.

“We’ll wrap our arms around Liv as she prepares to undergo surgery and starts to work through her rehab.”

Blaithin Mackin is also set for a stint on the sidelines after sustaining injury to her medial collateral ligament (MCL).

The Irish talent suffered a concern in the final minutes of the clash, with scans confirming a grade-three tear.

“Blaithin came from the ground towards the end of the game, after copping a knock to her knee in the last quarter,” Pettyfor said.

“Scans have confirmed a strain to her MCL. At this stage, we don’t think surgery will be required, and we’re confident she will return to the field this season.

“Blaithin will meet with a specialist later this week and from there, we will have a clearer timeline on her return date.”

Meanwhile, Sarah Lampard will be forced to sit out the next four to eight weeks with injury to her calf.
