The Casey Demons were unable to make the most of their opportunities in front of goal, falling to the Southport Sharks by 41 points in a disappointing outing at Casey Fields on Saturday morning.
Despite matching their opponents in general play, the Demons struggled to convert their dominance into scoreboard pressure, registering 6.17 (53) to Southport’s 14.10 (94). The inaccurate kicking ultimately proved the difference, as Southport capitalised on their chances and maintained control throughout the match.
Blake Howes continued his strong form with 30 disposals, providing plenty of drive through the midfield. He was well supported by Mitch Hardie, who gathered 28 touches, and Riley Bonner, who added 26 of his own in a solid performance.
In attack, Paddy Cross was the most effective option with two goals, while Jacob Van Rooyen, Koltyn Tholstrup, and Matthew Jefferson each contributed one major. However, Casey’s inability to finish their work inside 50 meant they were unable to build sustained pressure on the scoreboard.
Southport displayed a composed and efficient brand of footy, using the ball cleanly and finishing well to gradually build a match-winning lead. Their composure under pressure and scoreboard accuracy ultimately set them apart.
While the result is a setback for the Demons, there were still encouraging signs around the contest, particularly through the midfield. The challenge now lies in addressing their inefficiency inside 50 as they prepare for the upcoming rounds.
