The Casey Demons are proud to announce their leadership group for the 2025 VFL season, with Deakyn Smith appointed as captain and Riley Baldi and Paddy Cross named as vice-captains. They will be supported by Charlie Peters, Tom Freeman, Max Gregory, and Kai Windsor, who will play a crucial role in shaping the team’s culture and direction this season.
A New Captain to Lead the Way
Following the departure of Mitch White, Casey faced the challenge of appointing a new leader who could embody the club’s values and vision for the future. Head Coach Taylor Whitford believes Smith is the ideal choice to lead the Demons into the 2025 season.
“Deakyn encapsulates this group really well,” Whitford said. “He’s young, but he has great experience and a deep understanding of what it takes to be an elite preparer. He leads through his habits and values rather than being a loud, vocal leader. His game reflects exactly how we want to play—competitive, ruthless, and committed. He’s also a great connector between our AFL and VFL players, which is invaluable to our program.”
Vice-Captains Baldi & Cross Bring Balance
Supporting Smith as vice-captains are Riley Baldi and Paddy Cross, two players who bring complementary leadership styles.
“Riley was a unanimous choice from the playing group,” Whitford revealed. “The number of votes he received shows how much his teammates respect him. He understands the habits and behaviours required to play high-level footy, and he has built strong relationships within the group.”
Meanwhile, Paddy Cross brings energy and passion, helping to unify the younger core of the squad.
“Paddy leads with his actions—his fearless determination on the field is unmatched. But off the field, he’s also a social connector, ensuring strong relationships among all players. It’s a great experience for him to step into this role and make it his own.”
The Leadership Selection Process
The selection process was conducted with a player-led vote, ensuring the team had a say in its leaders.
“Our players determined what they wanted their leadership structure to look like,” Whitford explained. “They identified the individuals who best represent our standards and values, not just in pre-season but throughout the challenges of the season. It was important for them to take ownership of this process.”
A Strong Leadership Core
Alongside the captain and vice-captains, the leadership group includes Charlie Peters, Tom Freeman, Max Gregory, and Kai Windsor, who will drive the team’s culture on a daily basis.
“These four are the engine room of our program,” Whitford said. “They lead the day-to-day operations, ensuring standards are met at training and around the club. Whether you’re playing VFL or local footy, they help keep the group connected and accountable.”
Shaping the Team Culture for 2025
This leadership group will play a pivotal role in shaping Casey’s identity this season.
“I want this year to be player-driven,” Whitford emphasised. “At the end of the day, we provide services for the players, but it’s their job to take ownership of what they want to get out of the program. The leadership group has already been incredibly dedicated since before Christmas, and their investment in the season ahead is clear.”
Challenges & Goals for 2025
While the team is preparing for success, they also recognise the challenges ahead, particularly in integrating new players and strengthening the connection between the AFL and VFL programs.
“We’ve worked hard to build strong relationships between our AFL and VFL squads,” Whitford said. “Bringing in new players and developing connections has been a major focus. Our leadership group has been instrumental in setting the right habits and standards from day one.”
As the season progresses, the leaders will also need to navigate the complexity of players competing in different competitions.
“Some guys will be playing VFL, others in local leagues, and the program will look different week to week. That’s why we wanted a larger leadership group this year—to ensure every part of our program is supported.”
Looking Ahead
With a determined captain, experienced vice-captains, and a committed leadership group, the Casey Demons are set for an exciting 2025 season. The club is confident that this group will drive standards, strengthen team culture, and lead the Demons towards success on and off the field.
