Petracca and Oliver have been named in the AFLPA 22 Under 22 Team of the Decade.

MELBOURNE has boasted a league-high four players in the AFL Players’ Association’s 22Under22 Team of the Decade.

Lining up in the ruck is new Demon Brodie Grundy. Originally drafted to Collingwood with pick No.18 in 2012, Grundy entered the league as a promising ruckman and was quick to show his tall talent. Just three years into his career, the ruckman was named in the AFLPA’s 22Under22 team for the first time.

Grundy has since gone on to become one of the most well-respected rucks within the league, receiving a number of accolades including two All-Australian nods and two Copeland Trophy honours.

Christian Petracca, named at half-forward, was the second-most selected player in the side, registering votes from 74% of fans who voted. Drafted with pick No.5 in 2015, Petracca suffered an ACL injury during his first season at the top level, but was impressive upon his return, going on to average 18.8 disposals over the following three seasons.

The 27-year-old has now quickly become one of the best utilities within the league, earning himself a spot in the All-Australian team on three occasions.

Star midfielder Clayton Oliver was named as a follower. With the fourth pick of the 2015 draft, Oliver made a huge impact within the Demons line-up straight away, averaging 27 disposals across his first four seasons.

At only 25-years of age, the midfielder is continuing to improve his craft with each season, now a four-time Keith ‘Bluey’ Truscott medallist, equalling the club-high of best-and-fairest honours, alongside three All-Australian selections.

Steven May joins the side at full back. The backman started out his career at the Suns as a lockdown defender and quickly asserted himself within the league. He was handed the task to shut down some of the best forwards in the competition in only his first few years, doing so successfully.

After making the switch to Melbourne in 2019, he now plays a key role as part of the Demons’ strong backline and has been rewarded for his efforts, now a two-time All-Australian defender at the age of 31.
