The story, the heart, the identity of the Melbourne Football Club.

This is the club's full Constitution Preamble Proposal…

In the outskirts of Melbourne, in an area of scrub,
On Wurundjeri country was born this great club.

The writer of the rules, older than the game.
We wear the red and blue and bear the Melbourne Football Club name.

At the beating heart of Narrm you’ll find our spiritual home;
The mighty MCG is where the Demon Spirit roams.

A spirit forged from fire, that Checker Hughes set alight.
When the Fuschias became no more, and like Demons we did fight.

Demon tales of bravery are woven in our core.
From masterful acts on and off the field, to the frontline of the war.

Barassi Snr lost to Tobruk; ‘Bluey’ Truscott the Ace,
Smith the pivotal Red Fox; Barassi Junior so superb, he was running his own race.

Born of the Melbourne Cricket Club, there remains a link unbroken.
Symbolised by a Reserve brimming with red and blue, where the Demon Spirit is awoken.

A 57 year drought, bought with it tragedy and pain.
As the Demons suffered losses that were bigger than the game.

Flower, Stynes, Wight and Broadbridge, all too soon to depart.
Legacies all living on within beating red and blue hearts.

Debt at last demolished by a magical, Irish lilt,
On the bravery of Stynes, the loyalty of Jones and the passion of the Melbourne faithful, we rebuilt.

The pioneers of yester year, became the pioneers once more
When Melbourne drove the agenda of the women’s game right into the fore.

From Pearce to Davey and Paxman to Gawn,
New chapters always written, and another generation of stars are born.

Our vision for the future, shaped by all that’s gone before.
A club where we are proud to belong; with trust, respect, unity and excellence embedded at our core.

Beneath the grand old flag stand all whose hearts beat true.
With an unrivalled history, and this thing we call Demon Spirit, long live the red and the blue.
