Melbourne has signed Joel Smith for a further two years, keeping the utility in the red and blue until at least the end of the 2024 season.

Smith, known for his incredible athletic ability, has worked hard to develop his defensive craft and was rewarded with a qualifying final berth in 2021, before a minor calf injury ruled him out of selection for the rest of the finals series.

Most recently the 26-year-old switched to spend some time in front of goals,  further highlighting his ability to impact around the ground.

Melbourne List Manager Tim Lamb said he was pleased to secure Smith's services.

“We are really excited that Joel has extended with us for another two years,” he told Melbourne Media.

“Joel is a unique athlete who has shown he has the required attributes and talent to make a significant contribution at AFL level.

“He has the flexibility to play at both ends of the ground and we are excited to see what he can produce into the future.”

Smith, who stands at 191 centimetres tall, played five senior games this season before suffering a significant foot injury, which saw him miss over two months of football.

He was drafted in the 2015 Rookie Draft with pick number three and is the son of former Melbourne player, Shaun Smith.
