MIDFIELDER/forward Colin Sylvia will miss the next four to six weeks with a back injury, sustained in Friday night’s lost to Port Adelaide at AAMI Stadium.

The talented Demon suffered the injury late in the final term, when he landed heavily on his back following a marking contest with Port Adelaide’s John Butcher.

Sylvia was immediately taken from the field via a motorised stretcher.

Butcher was subsequently reported for rough conduct from the incident.

Sylvia spent Friday night in an Adelaide hospital, after scans revealed he had two minor spinal fractures.

Melbourne football manager Josh Mahoney said it frustrating to lose Sylvia early in the season.

“This is obviously disappointing for Colin to injure himself on the eve of the season,” Mahoney said.

“However, considering the circumstances the outcome could have been a lot worse and we look forward to having Colin back on the field in the near future.”
