A MOUNTAIN of work from a range of people is required for an AFL team to achieve the ultimate success.

In 2021, the Demons did just that, and Simon Goodwin is optimistic about what the next few seasons can bring.

The premiership coach has secured his future in the red and blue until 2024, and it’s safe to say he wouldn’t want to be anywhere else.

“It’s an exciting footy club at the moment,” Goodwin told Melbourne Media.

“It’s taken a lot of time and work from a lot of people to build us up into this position.

“I feel really humbled to get another couple of years extension to be a part of this footy club.”

While the Dees’ victory in Perth last September was the perfect reward for Goodwin, it is the journey that has brought him “an incredible amount of joy”.

“When you go into coaching, you go in with a plan around what you want to see this club become,” he said.

“Ultimately in the last 18 months we’ve really tracked towards becoming that footy club.

“I’m just fortunate to be involved with so many great people.”

Since Goodwin took the reins at Melbourne in 2017, he has certainly experienced the highs and lows that footy brings.

“I’ve grown with the playing group – I’m no different to them,” he said.

“As a coach you learn from your experiences and you’re able to get through the adversity and build some resilience and understand what it takes to be successful.

“It hasn’t been an easy journey for our footy club from the time that I walked through the door to where it sits today.

“It’s been tough in patches, but we’ve grown together, we’ve learned together, and we’ve experienced triumph together.

“We’ve done a lot together and we’re looking to do that for a bit longer yet.”
