MELBOURNE had one casualty during its Round 1 win over the Dogs, with Christian Salem subbed out of the game due to a knee injury.

The half-back flanker underwent successful surgery on Friday after chipping some cartilage in his knee and is set to be sidelined for six to eight weeks of footy.

In positive news, Trent Rivers looms as a possible replacement, with the premiership defender preparing to face a fitness test later in the week.

After missing the opening round of the season with a PCL injury, Rivers has re-joined the main group at training and is edging closer to a return.

Kade Chandler is also out of the rehab group after overcoming an abdominal muscle tear, while Michael Hibberd (calf) and Jake Lever (foot) are both making progress from their respective injuries and could return as early as this weekend.

Harry Petty remains three to four weeks away with a calf injury, while Daniel Turner has been sidelined by a stress fracture in his foot.
