MELBOURNE has signed Next Generation Academy talent Andy Moniz-Wakefield as a Category B Rookie on Friday afternoon.

Moniz-Wakefield, who comes from the Demons’ designated region in the Northern Territory, was able to join the club outside the Rookie Draft, according to the AFL’s NGA rules (NGA players not selected in the National or Pre-Season Draft qualify for Category B selection).

The 18-year-old showed tremendous growth in 2021, starring through the centre in his two NAB League games for the NT Thunder.

While he could become an additional midfield option, his small forward craft may be where he provides the most value when settling in at Melbourne.

At 180cm, Moniz-Wakefield is known for his cleanliness with the ball and ability to hit up targets with short, precise kicking.

He has great agility and an ability to manoeuvre through contests, and will be an exciting development player for the club over the coming years.

After three days of selecting, Moniz-Wakefield completes Melbourne’s draft-hand, joining Jacob van Rooyen, Blake Howes, Taj Woewodin and Judd McVee on the club’s list.
