BRISBANE Lions marquee player Tayla Harris is racing the clock to be fit for the club's NAB AFL Women's season opener against Melbourne on February 5.

Harris, the first player signed by the Lions ahead of the inaugural AFLW season, injured her shoulder in a gym mishap last week and missed last Saturday's practice match victory against Greater Western Sydney.

The 19-year-old key forward was back doing conditioning work on Monday, but with her shoulder still in a sling, coach Craig Starcevich said it was a waiting game.

"The physios have been pretty conservative with her," Starcevich told AFL.com.au

"She'll have to jump through some hoops to prove herself.

"They're (doctors and physios) all saying she should be right for the start, but…we're waiting on the docs and the physios to give her the all-clear," he said.

"We hope she'll be OK."

Defender Nicole Hildebrand also had a shoulder injury that prevented her from playing on the weekend, but she is expected to resume training this week.

Even without Harris and Hildebrand, the Lions prevailed against the Giants at Coorparoo, winning by 16 points in humid, then rainy conditions.
