BEN Mathews says Melbourne is determined to maximise every opportunity in the last five rounds of the 2016 season.

Mathews said there was plenty to gain against the Gold Coast Suns, Hawthorn, Port Adelaide, Carlton and Geelong Cats in the coming weeks.

“The focus is to prepare well every single week, every session and get the most out of the five weeks,” he told Melbourne TV.

“How many wins and losses [that will be] – that will play out.

“We go into every match to play well and to the best of our ability – and to win the game. We want to win the contested possession and we want to hunt the opposition and we want to structure up really well. It’s the same as every other team.”

Mathews said Melbourne’s clash against the Suns at the MCG on Sunday was critical.

“It’s a great opportunity to finish this season that we’ve got so much out of so far – and finish it well, and that starts this weekend against the Gold Coast,” he said.

“We look no further than that and we’re preparing well at the moment and it’s an opportunity for us.”
