LEONARD Joel will be selling at public auction the personal collection of Australian sporting legend Ron Barassi. For more than 60 years, Ron Barassi has been a key sporting and cultural figure, famous for his ground-breaking career in Australian Rules football. This is a collection of national significance offering a unique glimpse into a bygone football era and the inquisitive mind of an extraordinary player and revolutionary coach.

Throughout his life, Ron Barassi collected enthusiastically and broadly. The various items clearly indicate interests stretching far beyond football into various other sports, history, psychology and business. Each aspect of his career and personal interests are represented through the memorabilia, awards and iconic personal mementos spanning his entire life.

“I have enjoyed the journey behind the awards, the mementos, the historic pieces, the souvenirs and curiosities. I think now is a good time to share these treasures with the collecting community. I hope that in the caring hands of public institutions (sporting museums, libraries) and private collectors these items will bring pleasure to a wide public and be best preserved for the social and historic interest of future generations. And I’m glad my family will have a permanent record of my collection without the responsibility.”

–  Ron Barassi
