POWERFUL small forward Dean Kent says Melbourne completed “an honest review” of Sunday’s 36-point loss to St Kilda at Etihad Stadium.

Kent said the review was conducted on Monday and words were not minced during the assessment of the match.

“We had the review yesterday (Monday) and it was an honest review and there were a lot of efforts that weren’t acceptable as a playing group and as a club,” he told Melbourne TV.

“It was pretty brutal, but it wasn’t good enough and we copped it on the chin and we’re really looking forward to West Coast this week.

“It wasn’t Melbourne standard-like on the weekend.”

Looking ahead to Saturday afternoon’s clash against the West Coast Eagles at Domain Stadium, Kent said the team was not deterred by its six-day turnaround.

“It’s a short turnaround and we’ve got to go to the west. We’re structured up pretty well these days and instead of having a day off on Tuesday, we’ll have it on Wednesday and really just get the legs going early in the week,” he said.

“We’ll have one main training session, where we really focus on what we need to do to beat West Coast.

“We’re not really too concerned anymore about a six-day turnaround, but we’ve got to go there with the right mindset and make sure we win that contested ball and win the inside ball to make sure we have a red-hot crack.”

Although Kent acknowledged that the Perth trip was a great challenge for Melbourne, he said it was one the team was ready to tackle head on.

“West Coast last year was at that pinnacle of their game, but in the Grand Final they couldn’t quite do it,” he said.

“We see their game plan this year as still pretty similar, but inconsistent. They’ve won a few games by a hair, so we don’t see their game style as bullet proof.

“We’re really going to focus in on what we need to do to beat them, but this week is going to be all about us. We need to make sure we win that contested ball and go in and have a crack.”

Kent, who hails from Clackline, about 80km north-east of Perth, said he couldn’t wait to play in front of his family and friends for the just the second time since playing his first game at Subiaco against West Coast in round 22, 2014.

“It’s pretty good going back to play in front of family and mates, which is a pretty cool feeling,” he said.

“It’s good that we fly over on Thursday and [arrive on] Thursday night.

“I might catch up with a few mates before the game, but we’re purely going over there to win a game over there and do the club proud.”
