MIDFIELDER Dom Tyson says Melbourne has “achieved what we wanted to” heading into the home and away season.

Melbourne defeated St Kilda by 24-points in its final NAB Challenge match on Sunday and in the process, completed a trifecta of pre-season wins.

Tyson said it was good to reap the rewards of a long pre-season.

“We won’t get too carried away, but it’s all you can do is come out and do the things you’ve been working on in pre-season,” Tyson told Dee TV.

“It’s a long pre-season so we’ve been craving playing games and three wins is nice – I guess it’s just good to take momentum into round one.

“We’ve achieved what we wanted to and we’ve got 13 days to prepare for round one now.”

With the game against the Saints played at a high tempo, Tyson said it was important to have an intense final hit-out heading into the season.

The midfielder said Melbourne’s good form had come off the back of strong contributions across the board.

“We’re just getting a nice, even contribution,” he said.

“A lot of guys are in good form heading into round one, which is a good thing, it’s just good to see different blokes popping up every game.

“We’re sharing the load and playing pretty well as a group of 22 on the field at the moment.

Tyson collected 24 disposals, including 11 contested possessions, to help play an important role in the win over the Saints.

The onballer said he was enjoying the increased depth and support in Melbourne’s midfield this year.

“It’s just good to contribute and I’m enjoying working under Maxy (Gawn) there and we’ve got a lot who can float through there at the moment, so it’s just really good,” Tyson said.

“Benny Kennedy comes in and does exactly what you want him to do, Tommy Bugg can come through [and] Clayton (Oliver) hasn’t missed a beat.

Obviously Nath (Jones) and Viney, you know what you’ll get from them [and] even Bernie [can] come in off half back.

“I guess everywhere you look at the moment you’ve got confidence, which is a good feeling to have.”

Melbourne had eight goal kickers against the Saints, with five of those players kicking multiple goals.

Tyson said it was pleasing to see a number of players stepping up to make an impact in pre-season.

“Jeffy [Garlett] was getting out the back nicely and Hoges looked dangerous one-on-one and Kenty was buzzing around… and Wattsy as well,” he said.

“We’ve just got a nice mixture all across the ground and the boys down back were excellent as well so it’s just exciting.”

With round one against the Giants just 13 days away, Tyson said the team would relish the opportunity to recover and prepare for the start of the season.

“We’ll probably have four main training sessions, we’ll have a good look at GWS as well,” he said.

“I think we’ll get next weekend off to just rest and recover and get away, so that’ll be good.

“It’s 13 days [away] but it’s exciting and a good feeling heading into round one.”
