SAM Frost says it will be “interesting” coming up against his former team, Greater Western Sydney, in just his second match for Melbourne.

The former Giant will head to the nation’s capital, where GWS will host Melbourne at StarTrack Oval (Manuka Oval), but he said it was a strange feeling coming up against his ex-side.

“I’m not really sure how I feel about it,” he told melbournefc.com.au.

“It’ll be good to see a few of the boys, but once the game starts, I’d imagine it will be like any other game.

“It’ll be fun to come up against a few mates of mine.”

Frost said he was close with Tim Golds and Adam Tomlinson from the Giants.

“Hopefully I’ll get a chance to catch up with both of them,” he said.

“But I’ve got a lot of good friends at that club and it’ll be nice to see a few of them.”

The 21-year-old said he was looking forward to playing in Canberra, where he honed some of his craft with the Giants.

“I’ve played a number of games in Canberra, because GWS’ reserves played the majority of games there in the NEAFL,” he said.

“Manuka is a beautiful deck and it’s a great arena to play footy, so hopefully it’s a good game there.”

The 194cm tall has quickly become a versatile option at Melbourne, despite being drafted as a key defender to fill the void left by James Frawley, who joined Hawthorn as a free agent at the end of last season.

But Frost said he didn’t have a preference where he played.

“I did play a few roles early on with the Giants,” he said.

“My craft is better as a backman, because that’s where I spent most of my time, but I enjoy the freedom of the forward line, because you’re a little bit less dictated by your opponent.

“I enjoy the ruck too, because you’re always around the contest and involved in the game. But at the moment, I enjoy most positions and I love my footy and I’m enjoying having a run around the forward line.”

The 22-gamer said Melbourne and GWS have the makings of a genuine rivalry, given where both lists are at.

“I think some of the clashes we’ve had over the years – it’s definitely building a bit of a rivalry,” he said.

“It’s going to be a great game because Melbourne’s development – although at a different stage to GWS as a football club – is in a similar position to Greater Western Sydney.

“GWS is a very exciting and talented young team and hopefully in a decade it will have built into quite a rivalry.”

Frost said his first match for Melbourne was something he’ll never forget.

“I’ve played at the ‘G a couple of times and it’s a lot different when you’re in front with a home crowd," he said.

“The atmosphere was unreal and you couldn’t ask for a better first club at the club.”
