JACK Watts says he’s feeling “really positive” about the season ahead, adding that the squad wants to make an impact now, rather than in “two or three years’ time”.

Speaking on day 10 of Melbourne’s pre-season camp in Maroochydore, Watts said the team was bullish about what they wanted to achieve in 2015.

“The boys are pretty set and strong-minded in what they want to do, so it’s been a great camp,” he told Dee TV.

“Just having that second year with Roosy, it’s no longer [about] ‘this is what we’re trying to do’. It’s about ‘this is what we’re going to do’,” he said.

“We know what we’re expected to do and the guys are a lot more consistent and our standards have gone through the roof since a couple of years ago and there is a really good feeling. You never really know until games come around, so that’s going to be our real test.”

Watts said he had trained from day one of the camp after a suffering a groin complaint pre-Christmas. Despite that, Watts said he would be right for Melbourne’s NAB Challenge campaign.

“For me personally, it’s been great to get back into the main group and [put] some really solid sessions in the week and some solid kms in – but it’s been fun,” he said.

“From day one [of the camp], I was into it. Hopefully there will be no more rehab. I was modified with certain drills because of the groin, but [I’ve] done 90 per cent [at the camp].

“I’m feeling really good. I’ve been running as well as I’ve ran. I had a break a couple of weeks ago and then I had a break a couple of weeks ago. In two weeks of no running, I was able to put on a couple of kilos and I’ve been able to keep that on, so I’m feeling really good … so I’m in a good spot.”

Although he said the camp had had its tough moments, he added that it would be a key platform to look back on.

“We’ll look back and say ‘we got through that together as a group’,” he said.

“We’ve had some really good sessions and some meaningful heartfelt sessions behind closed doors, just discussing what we want to get out of this year and what we want to stand for.

“It’s been really important for us, so a few of those things will stick in our mind as we go forward this year and beyond.”

Watts said he was most likely to spend his time up forward this year, after also playing down back and in the midfield in recent seasons.

“I think I’ll play up forward and try and kick some goals and be pretty damaging up there,” he said.

“I might come up and play a bit of high half-forward and try to get a bit of the ball and then even rest deep [in the forward line].

“I’ll probably [play] a number of positions, but it should be a fun year, if we put it all together and start moving the ball really well and put a few things in place – then we’ll have a good year.”
