MIDFIELDER Michael Evans has signed a new two-year contract with the club.

Evans, who has been one of Melbourne’s better stories this season, will remain with the Demons for at least the 2014-15 seasons.

It has been a fine effort by Evans, who missed nearly all of 2012 with back and hip injuries, to become a mainstay in Melbourne’s team this season. The 20-year-old has played 12 AFL matches, including eight in 2013, since making his debut in 2011.

General manager of list management Tim Harrington said Evans had worked diligently to return to the highest level and had earned his deal.

“Michael’s come from the rookie list after a series of injuries that were difficult to diagnose and then difficult to rehab,” he said.

“He’s had to show a lot of patience and he’s impressed everyone during his rehab period and now it’s actually come to fruition, he looks like he’s mature beyond his game. He’s a very, very intelligent and mature man – he’s not a kid

“Footy wise, we see that he adds a lot to the Melbourne footy club and he’s the type of player we need more of. He can spread, he’s got good foot skills, he likes a goal, but he’s also a smart player. He also knows how to get into the play and connect with the play to get the free-flowing ball.

Harrington added Evans was an “all-rounder” as a player.

“He can play outside and inside and I reckon he’s going to be a long-term player,” he said.

Originally drafted from Claremont at No.31 in the NAB AFL Rookie Draft (held in December 2010), Evans was elevated to the senior list at the end of last season.
