Brad Green timeline

This will place him sixth on Melbourne’s games record, behind only David Neitz (306 games, 1993-2008), Robert Flower (272 games, 1973-87), Adem Yze (271 games, 1995-2008), Jim Stynes (264 games, 1987-98) and Steven Febey (258 games, 1988-2001).

Green became one of Melbourne’s best players of the past decade, with his consistentcy, durability, versatility and underrated courage among the features of his game.

Possessing a beautiful left foot, Green also had an uncanny knack of producing outstanding, improvised skills, due to his soccer background.

Green was equally adept at playing up forward, in the midfield and across half back.

Originally from Tasmania, Green was an outstanding junior cricketer and soccer player, before he was drafted by Melbourne at No. 19 in the 1999 AFL Draft.

He captained the under 15 Australian cricket team in the under 15 World Cup in the 1990s. Green also trialed with and was offered a youth contract by soccer giant Manchester United, but instead chose to return to Tasmania to pursue his schooling. From there, he turned his attention to Australian football.

Green won the Hunter Harrison Medal for the best division two player in the 1999 AFL under 18 championships.

He made his AFL debut for in round two, 2000 against the Kangaroos and, in his first final that year, booted four second half goals against Carlton to help Melbourne win a memorable qualifying final.

After finishing third in Melbourne’s best and fairest in 2008, Green won the Keith ‘Bluey’ Truscott Memorial Trophy in 2010 - his finest AFL season.

He also topped Melbourne’s goal kicking with 55 goals in 2010, and was named in the All Australian squad, but was widely considered an unlucky omission.

Green also represented Australia in the 2004 and 2010-11 International Rules series. He captained Australia in 2011.

Green was named one of Melbourne’s 150 Heroes in 2008.

In 2011, Green was appointed Melbourne captain. He held the position for one season, before the club appointed Jack Grimes and Jack Trengove as co-captains.

This year, Green became the eighth player to reach 250 matches for Melbourne, when he achieved the milestone in round 18 against North Melbourne at Etihad Stadium.

Green’s best effort in a match was 37 disposals and 18 marks against Adelaide in round 10, 2007.

In his 251st AFL match, he booted a career best five goals for the sixth time in his career. He also has 15 bags of four goals to his name.
