SAM Weideman says it was “an unbelievable feeling” kicking a goal with his first AFL kick and then play in Melbourne’s first win over Hawthorn in 10 years.

The key forward, who was drafted at No.9 in last year’s NAB AFL Draft, said it was a “childhood dream come true” to achieve what he did in his first game.

“I can’t believe it. To win against the Hawks makes it even more special,” he told Melbourne TV.

“I just had to compose myself [with my first kick for goal] because I was getting pretty excited and a little bit nervous, but I was stoked it went through and that set my day up.

“That was the theme of the day – keep composed, don’t try and do anything special and I’m hoping I did that. It was really special.”

Weideman said his first impressions of his debut game were of a “really hot and fast match early”.

“It’s hard to explain, but it was really different to anything I’ve played in before,” he said.

“I think the boys adapted to what Hawthorn brought to us and our contest was fantastic, which I think got us over the line.

“We knew we could do it. We had belief – that was the key to our success today, believing in one another and the goals keep coming. It was so enjoyable.”

The impressive young man said it was great to share the win with his family and friends.

“I got a lot of my best mates and all of my family down here. It’s really special to share that moment with them – they are just as excited as I am,” he said.
