First quarter: Melbourne 2. 7 (19) v Fremantle 2. 0 (12)

In a tight first quarter, Melbourne dominated the inside 50s (21 versus six) but were unable to make an impact on the scoreboard.

Jesse Hogan and Jake Melksham scored a goal each for Melbourne, with Tommy Sheridan and David Mundy scoring Fremantle’s two goals.

Christian Salem was the leading ball-winner for Melbourne with 12 disposals.

Second quarter: Melbourne 5. 15 (45) v Fremantle 4. 2 (26)

For the first 10 minutes, Melbourne struggled to again capitalise on their chances inside 50, with Fremantle scoring the first of the term.

A Nathan Jones snap sparked the Demons to life, with Jeff Garlett marking his return to the side with a brilliant goal. Tom McDonald scored a snap from the pocket soon after for Melbourne’s third of the term.

Towards the end of the term, the Dockers hit back with a goal via Brennan Cox.

Third quarter: Melbourne 9. 18 (72) v Fremantle 6. 5 (41)

Scoring remained tough in the third quarter, with both sides only scoring three behinds a piece in the opening 10 minutes.

The first goal of the term went to Clayton Oliver, who made the most of a 50-metre penalty to convert his set shot. Oliver had another for the term, with Christian Salem also scoring a major in between.

Fremantle hit back late in the quarter with two goals to Brennan Cox and Tom Sheridan.

The quarter looked to be done, however with seconds on the clock, Sean Darcy made an infringement in the ruck on Max Gawn inside the 50. Gawn converted to extend Melbourne’s lead to 31 at the final break.

Final quarter: Melbourne 13. 24 (102) defeated Fremantle 7. 6 (48)

Final quarter goals to Jesse Hogan, Charlie Spargo, James Harmes and Alex Neal-Bullen put the game well and truly out of reach for Fremantle.

In the last quarter, Melbourne manged to record their 50th intercept in the forward half for the match – the most ever recorded in VFL/AFL history.

Clayton Oliver was the leading possession winner for the Demons with 35, while Angus Brayshaw and Christian Petracca also recorded solid disposal figures.
