CASEY has cruised past Coburg to win by 77 points in the wet at Casey Fields on Saturday afternoon.

Casey Demons 16.12 (108) defeated Coburg 4.7 (31).

Fresh off the bye, Casey was the dominant side for four quarters and were cleaner around the ball when the rain began to fall.

The Demon’s contested game was strong all afternoon, handling the conditions well as they registered a sixth consecutive win.

“When the conditions changed I thought we adjusted really quickly,” senior coach Jade Rawlings told Melbourne Media.

“We were able to lock the ball in our half for reasonable periods of time and find ways to score eventually.

“So I thought it was a really good four-quarter performance.”

Billy Stretch was the standout midfielder racking up 27 disposals and kicking two goals.

“The thing I’m really pleased about with Billy is his attitude, his coach-ability and his capacity to be a really good team player,” Rawlings said.

“He’s constantly looking to bring other players into the game.”

Jay Kennedy-Harris and Tom Bugg both found the ball 27 times as well, performing well through the centre.

The winless Coburg started the game well, but the Demons quick ball movement allowed them to get out the back and start hitting the scoreboard frequently.

Sam Weideman benefited from Casey’s constant attack with a career-high seven goals. Weideman had a significant presence up forward, creating a contest and finishing well when he had the chance.

“I thought Sam Weideman was sensational,” Rawlings said.

“You feel confident when you kick it in his area.

“He’s a good player – he looks fit and strong.”

In a structural change, skipper Jack Hutchins pushed forward to help out Weideman and did so with three goals, while experienced utility Cameron Pedersen played in defence.

“The (Melbourne) coaches came to me and asked if Pedo could play back because there’s a shortage of talls in the AFL team at the moment,” Rawlings said.

“So we just wanted to explore what we’ve got on our list.

“Cameron accepted that really well.

“And we probably looked too tall if we had Hutchins down there as well, and in the end we found something with him as a forward.”

While the new-look forward line created havoc, the solidity of the backline was impressive yet again.

The defence restricted Coburg to just four goals for the match as Sam Frost led the way in a dominant display.

The Demons fielded a young side, with debutant Cory Stockdale and second gamer Cory Machaya both playing their part. The pair of 21-year-olds didn’t back away from a contest, and Stockdale capped off his debut with the final goal of the match.

Stockdale’s teammates celebrated in style and Rawlings said he was pleased to see the atmosphere amongst the group.

“You see the whole team get around him and some guys only met him today,” he said.

“I was just wrapped with the spirit our players played with today.

“They love playing together – you hear them sing the song, they love celebrating together too.

“They’re the things that make us really happy as a coaching group.”

In round 13, Casey will look to make it seven wins on the trot, playing Essendon at RAMS Arena on Saturday afternoon.
