MELBOURNE sends its condolences to the family and friends of prominent Indigenous figure Yami Lester, who recently passed away on July 21.

He was 75 years old.

Lester was a long-time and passionate Melbourne supporter and member, who used to watch the team train and play when it was in the Northern Territory.

A Yankunytjatjara man, of northern South Australia, Lester survived nuclear testing in outback Australia, and was known for his work as an anti-nuclear campaigner and Indigenous rights.

He was awarded an Order of Australia medal for his services to Indigenous affairs.

Lester was farewelled at a state funeral on Tuesday at the Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara Lands.
