First quarter: Geelong Cats 8.2.50 to Melbourne 2.0.12

Geelong got out of the blocks early with two quick goals to Jimmy Bartel and Tom Hawkins. Patrick Dangerfield was instrumental in both goals with centre clearances on both occasions. Aaron vandenBern kicked Melbourne's first major with a nice set shot from 40 meters out.

The dash and run from Melbourne at times looked impressive through the middle of the ground. Youngster Sam Weideman kicked our second goal of the quarter after some quick movement of the ball. Geelong's pressure around the ball was evident and seemed to have an impact on our ability to win the footy. Nathan Jones come up late in the quarter with what looked like a leg injury.

Second quarter: Geelong Cats 11.6.72 to Melbourne 3.2.20

The start of the second quarter started well for Melbourne with youngster Angus Brayshaw showing great determination to battle two Geelong players and still get his boot to the ball Melbourne’s third goal.

It wasn’t until the 15 minute mark Geelong scored their first goal of the quarter through Josh Caddy. Lincoln McCarthy and Steven Motlop both kicked majors for Geelong to make the margin 25 points at half time.
