First quarter: Fremantle 5.1 (31) to Melbourne 0.1 (1)

Fremantle dominated the first term, booting five goals to zip.

The Demons managed just one score – a behind, after Jack Viney’s snap for goal was rushed through.

Matthew Pavlich booted two goals for the Dockers, as the home side took a 30-point lead into quarter-time.

Second quarter: Fremantle 11.3 (69) to Melbourne 4.2 (26)

Fremantle slammed on another five in a row to start the second term, making it 10 goals straight and a 60-point lead – and it looked like how far Freo?

But Jeff Garlett finally opened Melbourne’s account at the 15-minute mark, which sparked a reasonable finish to the term by the Demons.

Melbourne kicked four of the last five goals before half-time, reducing the deficit to 43 points at the main break.

Third quarter: Fremantle 14.5 (89) to Melbourne 6.5 (41)

Melbourne pegged the margin back to 35 points after Jesse Hogan and Jack Grimes kicked back-to-back goals.

It meant the Demons had kicked six of the eight goals from midway through the second term until Grimes’ major.

But when Matt de Boer booted two in a row, Freo was back out to a 48-point lead entering the final term.

Final quarter: Fremantle 17.6 (108) d Melbourne 8.6 (54)

Melbourne kicked the first two goals of the final term – via Max Gawn and Hogan, who booted his second – to bring the margin back to 36 points.

But when Stephen Hill kicked Fremantle’s first major of the quarter at the 13-minute mark, it was the start of three in a row.

In the end, Fremantle won by 54 points in a disappointing day for Melbourne – and its 200-game skipper Nathan Jones, who suffered a leg injury and didn’t play in the second half.
