A NEW program has been launched called ‘Engaging Melbourne’, which aims to foster the engagement of international students with local students around three common themes – Melbourne, football and the city.

The Melbourne Football Club with the support of Study Melbourne and the University of Melbourne launched the event to staff and students from tertiary educational institutions in late February.

Engaging Melbourne is designed to deliver engagement opportunities for students in a fun and creative way and is aimed at tertiary students at universities, TAFEs and private colleges.

Some of the highlights include:

-         Making new friends from other universities and colleges

-         Exploring and better understanding the City of Melbourne

-         Building your social and professional network

-         Learning about Australian Rules Football

-         Developing your leadership skills

-         Having Fun

In 2016, there will be two programs, held during each semester over a six week period.

The program aims to create a sense of belonging to the city, the club, and the football code for international students.

Working in groups, participants will make new friends and new local and international connections.

What makes this program unique is the ability to facilitate opportunities for international and local students to work as a team, which fosters social inclusion and builds friendships.

Each program will run over a six-week period in semester – avoiding breaks and exam periods – and involve five different activities/events.

Participants will be working in groups throughout the duration of the program.

‘Intercultural training’ provides valuable insight and useful tools to communicate effectively across cultures and manage the complexities of building connections from different cultural perspectives.

‘City Dash’ is a street game through the streets of Melbourne, which encourages friendships and requires teamwork and problem solving. This is a great team building activity and will increase the participants’ appreciation for the hidden treasures of Melbourne.

‘Hands on Footy’ learns basic AFL skills – kicking, marking and handball – and understands the game of Australian football in a mini football academy.

‘AFL Game’ is the opportunity for participants to attend the MCG – the home of football – to watch an AFL match with your new friends.

‘Leadership Luncheon’ is a leadership seminar run by the Melbourne Football Club, providing an insight into what ‘leadership’ looks like at an AFL Club.  This is an incredible opportunity to hear first-hand from experienced leaders and gain an insight into their approach and how participants can apply that to their own professional development.

The semester one program will run from mid-April until late May and registrations are now open.

Participants must register for the semester 1 program at www.melbournefc.com.au/engagingmelbourne by 24th March.  All participants will then be contacted with information
