HARD-AT-IT midfielder Brent Moloney is a 50/50 chance of playing in Sunday’s clash against Sydney Swans at the MCG, but young-gun Jack Trengove will miss another week with a hip injury.

Skipper James McDonald, who has been sidelined since round 12 with a hamstring injury, will again face a fitness test.

Young-gun Jack Grimes, who suffered a hamstring injury against St Kilda in round 14, will be absent for three more matches with a hamstring injury.

Moloney suffered a corked thigh in the opening stages of last round’s 11-point loss to Fremantle at Subiaco Oval.

Although he played out the first half, Moloney did not play after the long break. He also had to remain in Perth for part of this week, due to the injury.

Trengove was a forced omission last round and will now aim for the round 18 encounter against the Brisbane Lions.

The 33-year-old McDonald has been right on the cusp of returning in recent weeks, but hasn’t quite got over the line.

Jordie Gybserts (back) and Stef Martin (hip) face fitness tests, while youngster James Strauss is another week away.

Forward Ricky Petterd (shoulder) remains out for the rest of the season.

Aside from Jordie McKenzie, who was among Melbourne’s best last round, five of the club’s six rookies are injured.

Michael Newton (quadriceps) and Jake Spencer (back) will miss another two weeks, Danny Hughes (ankle) is four matches away and Rhys Healey (hamstring) is sidelines for a further three games.

Another rookie, ruckman John Meesen (knee), remains out indefinitely.
