First quarter: Hawthorn 6.2 (38) to Melbourne 2.0 (12)

Melbournestarted in electrifying fashion, when it had two on the board, just threeminutes into the match. 

Jeff Garlettopened proceedings with a fine running goal, after Bernie Vince created it froman intercept at half-back. And when late inclusion Cam Pedersen marked stronglyand converted, the Demons were up by 12 points.

But when RyanSchoenmakers booted the Hawks’ first at the six-minute mark, it kick startedthe reigning premiers, as they registered six in a row to lead by 26 points atquarter-time. 

Second quarter: Hawthorn 10.6 (66) to Melbourne 3.3(21)

The Hawkscontinued to hold sway in the second term, adding four goals to one. 

Garlett wasMelbourne’s only goalkicker for the quarter, adding his second for the match atthe 15-minute mark.

At half-time,the Hawks led by 45 points. 

Third quarter: Hawthorn 18.8 (116) to Melbourne 4.6(30)
 

Any thought ofa Melbourne comeback in the second half was quickly thwarted when Hawthorn uppedthe ante with a scintillating third term.

The Hawkssmashed the Demons, booting eight goals to one, to gain a 76-point lead at thefinal change.

Pedersen bootedhis second, as Melbourne’s only goalscorer in the third term.

Final quarter: Hawthorn 24.11 (155) d Melbourne 7.8(50)

With the gameall but over, it was a question of whether Melbourne could stem the flowsomewhat or how far Hawthorn? 

In the end,Hawthorn continued to dominate and rub further salt into the Melbourne wound.The Hawks booted six goals to three, running out 105-point winners.

Garlett andPedersen added another to finish with three majors each. Rohan Bail also kickeda goal to become just Melbourne’s third goalscorer for the match, in anotherwise miserable day for the Demons.
