COACH Paul Roos says he took the team to watch the Hawthorn and Geelong match live at the MCG on Easter Monday to further develop the squad.

Roos said it was a great opportunity for his players to watch two quality teams compete on the big stage.

“It was pretty good for the players to see two quality teams going at it,” he said on Roos’ Views.

“The way the Hawks played was exceptional.”

Roos said it was good for the players to watch the game live to further their education.

“You can look at individual players and you can look at what happens behind the ball and if you’re a forward like Jesse Hogan, you don’t actually have to watch the ball,” he said.

“If you watch it on television, the camera follows the footy, so [watching the match live] you can watch behind [the play]. If you’re a defender you can see what the defenders do when the ball’s up the other end of the ground.

“I think different players take different things out of it, but it’s good watching the footy live.”

Reflecting on Melbourne’s round one win, Roos said the pressure and two-way running displayed by his team was what impressed him the most.

“It was an important start for us to get a win on the board in round one,” he said.

But Roos said the season opener was now behind them and the focus was firmly on this Saturday’s clash against Greater Western Sydney at StarTrack Oval (Manuka Oval).

“Having coached the Swans, I’ve been up there a fair bit and I enjoy the venue – it’s a great venue.”

“It’s a good-sized ground and it’s a fair ground for mids, forwards and backs.

“It’s not too big and it’s not too small, so I think that’s really important for the style of footy. They (GWS) had a good win last week and they’re certainly an up-and-coming team with a lot of talent … so it’s going to be a really hard game.”
