Academy prospect Ben Keays produced a tantalising 30-disposal and two-goal display, while veteran Brent Staker also booted a couple of majors from 25 disposals.

Tagger Brent Macaffer made a successful return to football almost a year after he ruptured his ACL for the second time in round 22 last season.

The 27-year-old produced a typically hard-working effort in the Pies' heartbreaking eight-point loss, finishing with 15 touches and four clearances.

Patrick Karnezis (28 touches) and Ben Kennedy (27, 12 clearances) were prolific and both booted two majors, while youngster Matt Scharenberg (21) held nine marks after dropping back to VFL level.

Out-of-favour key forward Jesse White booted 3.4 and took six marks in a confidence-boosting game.

Luckless Cat Daniel Menzel's hopes of an uplifting comeback from a fourth knee reconstruction have been boosted following a best-on-ground effort in Geelong's 50-point defeat to Box Hill.

Menzel, who has not played AFL since the 2011 qualifying final, provided a silver lining on a disappointing day for his side, finishing with three goals, 22 disposals and 10 clearances against the League leaders.

Billie Smedts regained some form with 26 disposals, while ex-basketball star Michael Luxford had 25 on a forgettable day for the Cats.

Hawthorn

State league affiliate: Box Hill Hawks (VFL)
This weekend: Geelong v Box Hill - Saturday August 15, 11am, Simonds Stadium

Jed Anderson's hard-working performance won't go unnoticed by Hawthorn's match committee after he helped Box Hill to a 50-point belting of Geelong.

Anderson had 19 kicks and laid seven tackles, while Jonathan Simpkin did what he has done all season by racking up 26 touches.

Last year's finals hero Will Langford got through his first game since a medial issue as Box Hill held onto top spot on the VFL ladder while running half-back Angus Litherland ensured he won't be far from returning at senior level if a spot opens up.

Hawks rookie Sam Grimley slotted a season-high six majors.

Melbourne

State league affiliate: Casey Scorpions (VFL)
This weekend: Casey Scorpions v Williamstown - Saturday August 15, 2pm, Casey Fields

A sensational eight-bounce running goal from Jack Fitzpatrick was the talking point from a hard-fought 17-point loss for Casey.

After jump-starting the Scorpions with three first-quarter goals, Fitzpatrick produced one for the highlights reel when he went on an unforgettable run in the second term.

Unfortunately, that was end of Fitzpatrick's goal-scoring heroics as the 200cm big man couldn't hit the scoreboard again.

Rookie-listed Mitchell White was best afield for the Scorpions, while young gun Billy Stretch booted a goal and had 16 touches at three-quarter time.

North Melbourne

This weekend: Bye; Collingwood v North Ballarat - Saturday August 15, 1pm, Victoria Park

Daniel Wells made a promising return from a lingering Achilles problem with an electric 14-disposal effort in little more than a quarter of game time for North Ballarat on Sunday.

The silky 30-year-old dominated in the third term with 11 touches, showcasing his speed and poise through the centre in an important step on the comeback trail.

However, Wells, who has not played AFL since round two and is lacking match fitness, couldn't put a timeframe on his senior return.

Meanwhile, Ryan Bastinac put his hand up for a recall with a 43-possession haul in the come-from-behind win, while Trent Dumont (35), Brad McKenzie (29) and Aaron Mullett (27) impressed.

Key forward Aaron Black booted 1.3 and took seven marks.

Another player who copped Ken Hinkley's wrath for last week's loss to the Western Bulldogs, Aaron Young, also stood up with 29 touches and two majors as the Magpies booked a finals berth.

Experienced utility Paul Stewart gathered 22 disposals, while omitted onballer Andrew Moore sustained a foot injury in the match.

Jones was well complemented by versatile forward Dean Towers, who collected 29 disposals and kicked two goals.

The pair will head the list of replacements for injured Swans Luke Parker (ankle) and Jeremy Laidler (hamstring) after they both went down against Collingwood on Friday night.

Youngster Daniel Robinson injured his collarbone in the early stages of the game.

Big-money forward Tom Boyd bagged five goals, including the match-winner in the final minute, to turn up the pressure on Jack Redpath for a senior spot as Footscray overcame Port Melbourne.

Boyd kicked truly after receiving a free-kick directly in front in the dying seconds. Earlier, he booted two final term goals to help inspire the Dogs to victory.

Fellow NAB AFL Rising Star nominee Mitch Honeychurch was best afield for Footscray with 22 possessions and two majors.

Nathan Hrovat (17, one goal) kept his name in front of the senior match committee, while key defenders Jordan Roughead (foot) and Fletcher Roberts (ankle) returned after stints on the sidelines.
