NEW Demon Ben Newton says he didn’t know if he’d make it at the highest level, after playing just four matches in four seasons at Port Adelaide.

Although injuries curtailed Newton’s time at the Power, the midfielder said there were times he wondered if he would make it in the AFL.

“There were definitely ups and downs,” he told 1116 SEN on Wednesday.

“I was watching the other boys who I got drafted with playing some good footy, but at Port we had a really strong team and when my footy started to get going, Port was going really well.

“I did doubt it a little bit, but the opportunity arose [at Melbourne] and I’m really happy with where I’m at now.”

Newton said coach Paul Roos simply wanted him to play his role and focus on a few key areas.

“He’s just after a really balanced game from myself,” he said.

“I haven’t played too much footy, so I’m just trying to make sure the defensive side of my game is really good and then get a good inside/outside balance, which I’m working on at the moment.

“KPI wise, we just focus on contested ball and tackles for myself.”
