SELECTION will again be another difficult scenario for Melbourne this week, according to coach Paul Roos.

With Melbourne set to take on the Western Bulldogs at the MCG on Sunday, Roos didn’t rule out making changes from the side that thrashed the Gold Coast Suns by 73 points at Metricon Stadium last Saturday evening.

Roos said Christian Salem, Heritier Lumumba and Angus Brayshaw, who all missed last weekend with concussion, would be assessed this week. But figuring out who makes way, if any of those players come up, plus the fact Casey is on top of the VFL ladder, means that spots are hard to come by at the moment.

“Our seconds had a terrific win and we’re certainly pleased with the guys that came into the footy team,” he said.

“[Last round’s inclusions, Billy] Stretch had a good game, [Viv] Michie had a good game, [Colin] Garland had a good game and Clayton Oliver looked fresh again.

“I think the key to our team is keeping it fresh. It’s hard to predict who’s not going to play well this week, but I think what we need to do is keep our team fresh.

“If we’re fresh and energised, we seem to play well. If we get a bit tired and guys look as though they’re struggling to get across the ground – that’s when we tend to struggle.

“We’ll seriously consider it, but it’s going to be hard to drop anyone from that team.”

Roos said key forward Chris Dawes made a positive return from a calf injury, playing for Casey against the Northern Blues at Casey Fields on Sunday, with two goals, but will continue in the VFL to build his match fitness.

“We were really pleased with the way he played last week, but we need to give him some game time,” he said.

“We need to give him some confidence that when he gets back in the team, he feels really good about himself.”

Roos said former co-captain Jack Trengove continues to make strong progress in the VFL, after missing almost two years with a foot injury.

But he added that no pressure would be placed on Trengove to return to the AFL.

“I suspect a lot of it for Jack is just enjoying his footy and getting back out there and playing really well and winning games,” he said.

“It’s about getting bumps and knocks … but he’s been really consistent with his performance, so at some point he’ll start putting his hand up for senior selection.

“Then we’ll start to judge him purely on form.”

Roos said utility Jack Grimes had also been “consistent” this season in the VFL.
